Green crystals of Tourmaline (some with pink “watermelon” centers) are on this piece of quartz. This is a nice inexpensive piece of Tourmaline in matrix.

Tourmaline is a group of silicate minerals in which boron is compounded with elements such as aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium. This gemstone comes in a wide variety of colors. There are 11 different species, depending on their chemical composition and properties.  Tourmaline is one of the Birthstones for the month of October. Some of the more common varieties (Species) of Tourmaline

  • Schorl - Brownish-black to black (most common)

  • Dravite - Dark yellow to a brownish-black

  • Elbaite species (named after the island of Elba, Italy)

    • Achroite – Colorless

    • Indicolite - Light blue to bluish-green

    • Rubellite - Red or pinkish-red color

    • Verdelite -Green

    • Watermelon-  Green outside with a red interior
