Heulandite - India
Heulandite - India
Location: Aurangabad District, Maharashtra, India
Size: 1.77 x 1.77 x 1.2 inches
This piece has glassy light pinkish Heulandite crystals and looks very nice for the species as it reflects the light. The Heulandite sits on a base of white Mordenite.
Heulandite is no longer (1997) the name of a specific mineral but the name of a series of tecto-silicate minerals in the zeolite family group. There are currently 5 minerals in the Heulandite series with most being Heulandite-Ca. Because they look so similar the series name Heulandite is still used whenever testing has not been performed on the specimen. Crystals are monoclinic and often have the characteristic coffin-shaped habit, but they also form simple rhombic prisms.
Mordenite is one of the most abundant zeolites that occurs in altered volcanic deposits. It is often associated with other zeolites (Stilbite and Heulandite are two of the more prominent). It often crystallizes in the form of fibrous aggregates, vertically striated prismatic crystals and masses.
