Selenite is a variety of the mineral gypsum named after the Ancient Greek goddess of the moon, Selene. Other varieties include satin spar, desert rose, and gypsum flower. All varieties of gypsum are composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate (meaning that it has two molecules of water).

The largest crystals of Selenite are found in the Naica Mine's Cave of the Crystals with some being over 39 feet and weighing an estimated 55 tons.

Gypsum, of which Selenite is a member of occurs on every continent and is the most common of all the sulfate minerals. It is formed as an evaporative mineral, frequently found in alkaline lake muds, clay beds, evaporated seas, salt flats, salt springs, and caves. It is often found with other minerals, ores and rocks such as; calcite, dolomite, limestone, copper ores, coal, sulfides and iron ores.

In dry, desert conditions, sand may become trapped with the gypsum crystals as they form making them take on shapes such as an interior hourglass shape or the familiar “desert rose”.

Selenite is a fairly delicate stone that required it to be handled with care. Because Selenite is water soluble it is recommended to avoid submersing or rinsing your stone in water. To clean selenite, simply use a soft cloth free of any contaminates. You should also try to avoid long exposure to direct sunlight, as this can cause the loss of luster.
