Opal (Var. Hyalite) & Torbernite - North Carolina

$25.00

Location: Chalk Mountain Mine, Spruce Pine, Mitchell County, North Carolina, USA

This large plain colored piece does not look like all the much under normal lighting BUT get it under SHORT Wave UV and the specimen lights up (first two pictures). It also fluoresces under LONG Wave but not as bright (third picture).

There are also some very small Torbernite crystals so there is some very minor readings on a Geiger counter. Torbernite, whose name derives from the Swedish chemist Torbern Bergman, is a radioactive, hydrated green copper uranyl phosphate mineral, found in granites and other uranium-bearing deposits as a secondary mineral.

Size: 5.4 x 5 x 3.6 inches
