Galena and Dolomite - Missouri
Location: Viburnum Trend, Reynolds County, Missouri
Size: 2.4 x 2.0 x 1.5 inches
This specimen contains a large main crystal cube of galena as well as Cubo-octahedral crystals. There is an abundance of white dolomite crystals on the specimen as well.
Galena is a lead sulfide the primary ore mineral of lead. Worked for its lead content as early as 3000 BC due to it being able to be melted in a wood fire. It is found in ore veins with sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, etc.
Dolomite is an anhydrous carbonate mineral composed of calcium magnesium carbonate and is often white, grey, pink, tan and colorless. The term dolomite is also often used for a sedimentary carbonate rock composed mostly of the mineral dolomite. Dolomite is used as a source of magnesia (a feed additive for livestock), an ingredient in the production of glass, bricks, and ceramics as well as a flux in metal processing.
